We recently completed our Second
Annual Music For the Hungry event. A huge crowd enjoyed live music, a
BBQ, bake sale and cookie decorating activity. We raised nearly $1300 for
Share Our Strength's efforts to fight childhood hunger in America. It was
an ideal time for our community to get their kids into the kitchen to cook for a
cause.

During the
2007 Summer, Michelle Stern, owner of What's Cooking,
participated in an Educator
Study Tour to Honduras with Heifer International. This Study Tour
provided us with an opportunity to learn more about Heifer International, issues
associated with the root causes of hunger, poverty and environmental
degradation, and how our actions as educators help to alleviate these
problems. Also, by visiting Heifer project sites and partners, we saw firsthand
how Heifer's approach to development really works. What's Cooking will
be offering more classes that teach students how food can not just
help them live a healthy life, but that it can also be used as a form of
service within their local and global communities.

Every
summer, Michelle offers workshops to Marin Humane Society campers to bake
treats for the dogs, cats, horses and
birds at the shelter.

What's Cooking would be
happy to work with your school or organization to do cooking-related service projects
with children in your community.

I
just wanted to tell you again how awesome yesterday was! Really!
I was so impressed with EVERYTHING! I am so happy that we were a
part of it. You should be really very proud of yourself. -AL
Thanks
for a great event! It was fun to see the coverage on KRON news last
night and the photo in the Marin IJ today. Thanks fo getting the kids
involved. My daughter and her friend had a great time and I know other
families at our school who would like to participate next time.
-MT
Feedback
from the event to benefit our residents at Homeward Bound's Family
Emergency Center has been fantastic! We really appreciate this
opportunity through What's Cooking to let local families get involved
in the work that we do on behalf of the community. -MKS
The highlight of our first annual "Kids in the
Kitchen" event was our guest speaker, Michelle Stern of What's
Cooking! She enchanted the children with her
demonstration of a fun and easy way to assemble a variety of healthy
ingredients, ultimately producing an adorable Whalewich sandwich.
Her enthusiastic and simple approach to food preparation fired up
the imagination of her young audience, and had the children crowding her
table after her talk for a chance to chop and mix ingredients.
Michelle left the kids excited about their own abilities and
empowered with useful ideas to take home. - C.M, Junior League of Santa
Rosa
