What's Cooking...in the Community
What's Cooking is proud to participate in cooking events with children that benefit our community: This Spring, What's Cooking is proud to promote
and participate in Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale. This is
a national campaign that mobilizes Americans to end childhood hunger by holding
bake sales in their communities. Great American Bake Sale proceeds are
granted to organizations in communities across America to help provide at-risk
children with nutritious meals when they are needed most - during the summer and
after school. Additionally, proceeds support Share Our Strength's
Operation Frontline, a chef-led nutrition education program for low-income
children and families. The Food Network and Family Circle magazine are
partners of this event and offer their support in this endeavor. Please
visit the What's
Cooking Blog to learn more about our efforts with the Great American Bake
Sale, and for tips on how to run your own. If you would like to make a financial contribution towards our goal, you may do so on the What's Cooking Bake Sale page of the Share Our Strength website. During the 2007 Summer, Michelle Stern, owner of
What's Cooking, participated in an Educator
Study Tour to Honduras with Heifer International. This Study Tour
provided us with an opportunity to learn more about Heifer International, issues
associated with the root causes of hunger, poverty and environmental
degradation, and how our actions as educators help to alleviate these
problems. Also, by visiting Heifer project sites and partners, we saw firsthand
how Heifer's approach to development really works. What's Cooking will
be offering more classes that teach students how food can not just
help them live a healthy life, but that it can also be used as a form of
service within their local and global communities. During the Summers of 2006 - 2008, What's Cooking has offered (and will be offering) workshops to Marin Humane Society campers to bake treats for the dogs, cats, horses and birds at the shelter. And in March, 2007 we coordinated a class with Homeward Bound of Marin called Kids Cooking for Kids, where we cooked healthy meals and bag lunches for 13 families living in an emergency shelter in San Rafael. Many thanks to All Stirred Up for hosting this special event! What's Cooking would be happy to work with your school or organization to do cooking-related service projects with children in your community.
